hewn logs without windows and a high roof without an attic.  On the walls
you see a variety of weapons hung there by Vikings who need their hands
free in order to eat and drink.  The two long tables near the walls go
to the end of house, with the central space open for freedom of movement
and the Vikings' wild entertainment.  The tables are full of food and kegs.
You can hear wild screams and songs filling the air, together with smoke.
The fire from a stone hearth between tables makes you sweat real bad,
you wonder how people here bear it.

The Common Grounds

You are in the commons near the center of Bretraborg.  In some places
you can see some green grass or large stones, but for the most part
there simply is hard-packed, bare earth.  The houses surrounding this
place are essentially big, long, windowless wooden barns, standing only
one story tall.  All around you, you can see large dogs and children
playing and wandering Vikings.  The valley is surrounded by high,
tree-covered mountains; however, the nearest mountain to the northeast
is bare.  Looking at the building to the north, you see that a brass
sign is on the door and a dragonlike head made from wood is mounted
just below the roofline.
A missionary stands here, trying to convert you to true religion.
